Premier League duo Sunderland and Fulham are both set to go head to head in the race to land highly rated Hamburg holding midfield player Tomas Rincon when the January transfer window opens once again for business in the new year, according to reports in the Sun.

The Venezuela international has a current contract with the Bundesliga outfit that runs until June 30 2014, and as a result, Rincon would be available to purchase on a free transfer come the end of this campaign.

However, the top-flight strugglers will now both attempt to lure the 25-year-old to England at the turn of the year by offering his employers in Germany a cut-price fee of just £2.2 million to sign the player in January, rather than risk losing Rincon on a free next summer.
