Brendan Rodgers may well feel he could do with further central midfield options and clearly a player of Alonso’s quality is worth breaking the Anfield outfit’s youthful transfer policy for.

The 32 year old enjoyed five successful seasons at the Merseyside club before moving to Real Madrid in a £30m deal in 2009 and Alonso may well be interested in a return to Liverpool, where he is still a huge fan favourite.

Arsenal, Man United and Man City are all also keeping a close eye on developments at the Bernabeu, with Alonso having just six months to run on his current contract and the possibility of a free transfer exit in the summer looking more an more likely.

A move for Xabi Alonso will however involve the need to cover his £140k a week wage demands but perhaps such an outlay is less of an issue given the Spanish international wouldn’t cost a penny.

With Steven Gerrard having been out for a few weeks Brendan Rodgers has been using Joe Allen, Lucas Leiva and Jordan Henderson as his midfield options and all three have impressed, however Alonso would offer a new dimension to his side’s play though one imagines that the Real Madrid star would only consider such a move if Liverpool have secure a Champions League berth.
