Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers wants to sign Nottingham Forest 20-year-old defender Jamaal Lascelles when the transfer window reopens at the end of the season, reports the Mirror.

The 20-year-old has excelled in the Championship this term, and impressed everyone with his immense physicality and last-ditch tackles. He’s made 14 appearances this season, and scored his first goal for the club against Blackpool on Saturday, helping his side solidify their fifth place in the table.

Lascelles has also interested Arsenal and Everton in the past, but Rodgers is keen on stealing a march on his rivals at the end of the season, and securing a deal for the talented defender.

Liverpool currently have a wealth of centre-half options, so it’s perhaps surprising that they are being linked with another central defender. Daniel Agger and Mamadou Sakho are currently injured, but when they return to fitness they will compete with Martin Skrtel and Kolo Toure for a starting spot. Young summer signing Tiago Ilori didn’t make one appearance for the club during the first half of the season, and was shipped out on loan to Grenada in January.

If Lascelles does join in the summer, it could signal the end of one of the current crop’s Anfield careers. The youngster will have his work cut out to force his way into the starting lineup, however.
