Bayern Munich president has been sentenced to three and a half years in jail for tax evasion.

The 62 year old had hoped that his admission of guilt would lead to a lesser sentence but the judge ruled that his confession fell short of ‘full disclosure’ after the former World Cup winner had admitted to dodging tax on a sum of just under €20m only for the Allianz Arena supremo to be found to have owed a total of nearer €30m.

Hoeness had offered his resignation as president of the Bavarian club at last year’s annual meeting but was backed by the club’s members to remain in place.

The former forward spent nine seasons in the Bayern Munich first team set-up, helping the German giants to three domestic titles and three European Cup triumphs.
