Liverpool are set to battle it out with Serie A giants AC Milan at the end of the season in the race to land out-of-favour Manchester City defender Micah Richards, according to reports in the Daily Mirror.

The some-time England international has once again only been used as a bit-part player at Eastlands so far in this campaign under new City head coach Manuel Pellegrini, with Richards spending most of this season warming the substitutes’ bench rather than playing for the Blues.

And having also rejected City’s recent offer of a new five-year deal in the north west, the club will now be forced to offload Richards when the summer transfer window finally reopens again for business at the start of July in a cut-price deal, rather than risk losing the player on a free transfer the following year when the 25-year-old’s present deal with the club runs out.

All of which has now left Brendan Rodgers going head to head with the Rossoneri to try and win the attacking full back’s signature for next season after the Northern Irishman tried, and failed, to sign Richards on loan in January.
