Ex Anfield star reckons the Blues should consider pulling out of the race to sign Costa.
Former Liverpool midfielder Ronnie Whelan does not think that Chelsea should continue their pursuit of Atletico Madrid forward Diego Costa.
The 25-year-old enjoyed a brilliant club season, scoring 27 goals in 35 La Liga games and netting eight times in nine Champions League outings.
However, he had a torrid time for Spain in last night’s 5-1 defeat to the Netherlands at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Costa was generally unimpressive and was involved in two moments of controversy.
He was accused of diving to win Spain a first-half penalty and was later very lucky to avoid a red card for head-butting Dutch defender Bruno Martins Indi.
Speaking to Irish broadcaster RTE Sport, Whelan was far from complimentary about Costa, who has been touted as a potential £30m summer signing for Chelsea.
