Liverpool look set to step up their interest in Manchester City defender Micah Richards, who wants an exit from the club, according to the Daily Mirror.

The Reds are looking to strengthen defensively this summer after some uncertain performances at the back last season just saw them fall short of City in the Premier League title race.

Although Richards has been with the club for his entire career so far, he has found first-team games hard to come by in the last few years after falling behind Pablo Zabaleta in the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium.

The 26-year-old, who can operate at right-back or centre-back, remains a highly regarded talent in this country, and has also been linked with the likes of Arsenal and Newcastle United in the recent past.

Still, Liverpool now look set to make him their latest summer signing, with the player available on the cheap as he enters the final year of his contract with City, and he could prove a bargain for the Merseyside giants.

Manager Brendan Rodgers has done well to revive the careers of players like Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho and could do the same with Richards, who will want a chance to play regular football at the top level.
