Southampton have seen a bid for young Leeds United right back Sam Byram turned down, according to reports from the Express, as new Saints manager Ronald Koeman looks to stamp his mark on the squad at St. Mary’s after the loss of a number of key players this summer.

Young defender Byram has emerged as one of the key players at Elland Road after an impressive two seasons playing at right back, and the Whites will be keen not to lose one of their brightest young players having already sold top scorer Ross McCormack this summer.

Southampton have, themselves, sold a young right back this summer, with Calum Chambers joining Arsenal for around £16m, but they do still have Nathaniel Clyne available for selection, a player who also had a good 2013/14 campaign.

Koeman has been quiet in the transfer market since taking over on the South Coast, although he has signed Eredivisie duo Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle.

He is likely to have a significant transfer kitty to spend, however, with Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Dejan Lovren and Chambers all having left for significant fees this summer.
