Leeds United could now face Championship promotion delay

Leeds United could have to wait longer for their promotion celebrations with latest reports suggesting that the Championship play-off final could be played in June.

The reason behind this delay is because of Coventry’s success in the FA Cup.

Currently scheduled for Sunday, May 26, the play-off final will take place barely twenty-four hours after the FA Cup final on May 25.

Leeds United face delay because of Coventry City

Championship sides Leicester City and Coventry both qualified for the quarterfinals of the FA Cup but only Coventry managed to go through.

They beat Wolves 3-2 to set up a thrilling semifinal against Manchester United, who beat Liverpool in a dramatic encounter at Old Trafford.

Leicester suffered defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge with the Blues meeting Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the semifinal now.

According to The Daily Mail, in the event that Coventry advances to both finals, the play-off will take place on Sunday, June 2, seven days later.

In an additional difficulty, Wembley will host the Champions League final on Saturday, June 1.

However, the EFL has reserved the stadium in case it becomes necessary on Sunday.

Leeds United and Leicester are fighting to top place

Only in the event that Coventry are engaged in the final would the backup date be utilised, and any decision will be made after the fact.

This means that Leeds United and any other play-off contenders who don’t finish in the top two might end up playing their individual semi-finals without knowing when the final would take place.

The Whites are currently leading the Championship standings but they have equal points with Leicester who also have a game in hand.
