Sunderland have declared their interest in Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck, after growing frustrated with Fabio Borini’s lack of interest in his proposed £14m move to the Stadium of Light.

Black Cats’ boss Gus Poyet remains interested in Liverpool’s Italian forward, for whom he had a bid accepted last month, but could be ready to turn his attention to a new target after Borini suggested he would rather stay and fight for his place at Anfield.

The new number one target for the Uruguayan is, according to the Daily Mail, 23-year-old Welbeck, who spent a season on loan with Sunderland back in 2010-11.

After new United manager Louis van Gaal reiterated that his first choice strike pair would consist of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie this season, the England forward has been subject to a substantial about of speculation, as well as a failed £12m bid from Hull City.

It is thought that Welbeck is willing to remain at Old Trafford this summer, but with no Champions League or Europea League football during this campaign, he could find his first-team appearances extremely limited.

However, speaking after his side’s 2-2 draw at West Brom on Saturday, Poyet said of the Borini deal: “It’s still ongoing. I can assure the supporters it’s not over.”
