Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has heaped praise on teammate Raheem Sterling, following the teenager’s fine start to the new season.

Sterling has scored against both Southampton and Tottenham in the early stages of the current campaign, and Enrique believes that the young Englishman is destined for big things.

“Raheem is one of the best young players in the world, for sure,” said the left-back. “He’s doing unbelievably well for us. I think this season he’s going to score 15 goals or more. We’ve already told him that.

“He’s going to make a massive impact in this team. He’s still young, but you can see over the past two years just how much he has improved.”

The Spaniard’s comments follow last season’s criticism that Sterling does not score enough goals. Enrique was dazzled by the winger’s recent performance at White Hart Lane, and added: “Everyone was talking before about how he doesn’t make many assists or score many goals, but this season he’s got two already. Now that he’s adding goals to his game, he’s a massive player for us.”

Enrique, 28, who was speaking to the Daily Mirror, came on to make his comeback after nine months out with a knee problem and admits he faces a real battle to dislodge Alberto Moreno after his compatriot’s wondergoal at Spurs.

“After so long out, it was great to be back playing,” he said. “I know I have to go little by little and be patient. I will have my chances. I know I have the confidence of the manager, so I’m happy about that.”
