The Reds are known to be keen on bringing in an upgrade on current number one Simon Mignolet, who has not been at his best, with Valdes emerging as Brendan Rodgers’ top target in that position.

Real Madrid’s out-of-favour shot-stopper Iker Casillas has also been linked with a move to Anfield, but it appears that the club are still hopeful of luring Valdes to Merseyside, with the experienced Spaniard thought to be ready to take a pay cut to seal the move.

The 32-year-old free agent earned £90,000 a week at the Nou Camp, but is ready to sign a short term deal on reduced wages to prove his fitness to Liverpool after a lengthy spell out injured.

Valdes was tipped to join AS Monaco in the summer transfer window, but his injury is thought to have derailed the proposed move to Ligue 1, with a move to the Premier League now looking the most likely outcome to this ongoing transfer saga.
