The 28-year-old was linked with a big-money move to both Arsenal and Chelsea in the summer, before sealing a £17.5million move to the Vicente Calderon.

And since his move to the Spanish capital he has carried on his fine form in front of goals, bagging five for the season so far, and has now admitted that he turned down the chance to head for the Premier League upon leaving Bayern Munich.

“I had better offers than from Atletico,” the Croat said.

“There were calls from the UK that interested me, but I believe that their style of football is simply not my way. There were also interest from Italy and some concrete offers from Russia.

“I’m very pleased with everything. I couldn’t choose a better path after leaving Bayern Munich. The fans here accepted me immediately.

“Atletico was the best possible decision for me at this stage of my career.”
