Flamengo – with 16% of all supporters in the football loving country – earned $66 million, as did Sao Paulo-based Corinthians. Third-placed Sao Paulo were $23 million behind with revenues of $43 million.

The top twelve sides (Flamengo, Corinthians, Sao Paulo, Vasco de Gama, Palmeiras, Santos, Cruzeiro, Atletico Mineiro, Botafogo, Fluminense, Gremio and Internacional) had combined revenues of $430 million. It’s a figure that dwarfs the $13 million combined revenue of every other professional side in the country and is something that urgently needs addressing if Brazil is to have any hope of retaining its best players rather than losing them to Europe.

Elsewhere in Brazil, the first leg of the Copa do Brasil final is tonight, with Atletico Mineiro hosting Cruzeiro.
