Reports on Goal.com claim that the Premier League champions remain optimistic of agreeing a new deal with Milner worth £90,000-a-week, but add that the Reds remain huge admirers of the player.
The midfielder remains locked in negotiations over a new deal, but is still undecided on his future. Liverpool were rebuffed in an effort to sign Milner last summer and are ready to make a move if the opportunity presents itself.
Goal even suggests Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers might see Milner a short-term replacement for departing captain Steven Gerrard, who will leave the Anfield club when his contract expires at the end of the season.
The 29-year-old has played a key role for Manuel Pellegrini’s side this season and scored both goals in Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup third round.
