The 20-year-old is one of the most highly regarded young talents in England at the moment, having shone in the Premier League since being introduced into the Saints first-team as a teenager.

Southampton have a great history of producing top quality homegrown talent, with the likes of Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana among the academy graduates poached by bigger clubs last summer, while Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are other notable examples from the past.

Ward-Prowse may be the next on the move, with City keen to land him despite possible competition from the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, according to information in the Daily Mirror.

City are under pressure to include more homegrown players in their squad and now look set to invest in this top English talent.
