However, unluckily for the Red Devils and the Merseyside club the German is still aiming to become the number one at the Nou Camp rather than leave the Catalan club. Having joined last summer, the 22-year-old has made fifteen appearances for Barce exclusively in the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.

Fellow new signing Claudio Bravo has been manager Luis Enrique’s first choice in La Liga, much to the keeper’s disappointment.

He said: “It’s not easy being in a situation where I’m not currently the clear No.1. I received a nice welcome, but it’s not like some rolls out the red carpet for you here.

“It would have been naive to believe that it’s an easy job to become the undisputed No.1 at Barcelona, but that’s my target, and it’s something I will tackle with all my ambition. It is difficult for me to accept that I only sit on the bench in the league. I want to play more, of course.”

Liverpool may want the former Borussia Moenchengladbach star to take over from Simon Mignolet between the sticks. The Belgian has been in and out of form throughout the season. Meanwhile United currently have one of the best goalkeepers in the world in David De Gea, but he has been linked to Real Madrid by Sky Sports. Should the Spaniard leave Old Trafford they would likely need to bring in a replacement.

However, both sides may find it hard to buy Ter Stegen, with Barcelona surely against selling their players while under a transfer embargo that lasts until next January according to the BBC.
