Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a major boost by Atletico Madrid as they chase the signing of Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld this summer, according to latest reports.

According to the Daily Mirror, the Spanish giants could be ready to sell Alderweireld to Tottenham after cancelling an agreement with Southampton to sell him for a fixed price at the end of his loan spell at the St Mary’s Stadium last season.

The 26-year-old impressed greatly during his season-long stay with the Saints, who had hoped to snap him up permanently, according to the Daily Express, though the Mirror’s report now makes that look unlikely.

Recent claims by the Daily Star add that Chelsea are also interested in Alderweireld this summer, so this latest development could be good news for the Blues as well, with Jose Mourinho seemingly keen to add to his defensive options for next season.

John Terry’s immense form was a big factor behind the club’s Premier League title win, but with the former England captain now 34 years of age, it seems logical for the club to look for a long-term replacement, and Alderweireld has shown that he can hold his own at the very top level.

A title winner with Atletico Madrid in 2013/14, the former Ajax man also did well to help Southampton to 7th place in the Premier League last season, with the second best goals-against record in the country, behind only eventual champions Chelsea.

That kind of form would also be a big boost for Spurs, who were not able to break into the top four and who look in need of improvements in that area after some unconvincing form from players like Younes Kaboul and Federico Fazio.
