City work on deal for world renowned star.

Manchester City have reportedly met the £28m release clause needed in order to sign Atletico Madrid defender and Manchester United target Diego Godin this summer.

However, initial reports suggest that the Uruguayan international has snubbed an offer of an £88,000 per week contract at the Etihad Stadium, and could stay put at his current club.

City are in need of new centre-backs this summer after poor performances from out-of-form captain Vincent Kompany last season, but Marca claims they are struggling to bring in Godin.

This could end up being a boost for rivals United, who are also known admirers of the 29-year-old and who could turn to him as a cheaper alternative to Sergio Ramos.
