Roberto Firmino had given the hosts the lead after just 10 minutes, but the Brazilian saw his effort cancelled out by Aaron Ramsey just four minutes later in a stunning start to the game.

The drama didn’t end there, as Firmino stepped up to produce a piece of magic with a spectacular long-range shot that beat Petr Cech and flew into the top corner.

With the home side seemingly in the ascendency, they were pegged back again just six minutes later with Giroud stealing a march on his marker at the front post before sending a delicate little flick through the legs of Simon Mignolet.

The Belgian has been guilty of making several high-profile mistakes so far this season, and although his defenders deserve a share of the blame, it wasn’t enough to prevent the shot-stopper from receiving a significant backlash on social media.

Whether or not the defensive error from the Reds comes back to cost them remains to be seen, as after four goals in the opening 45 minutes, the two sides have produced a thrilling foundation for a crucial second half for both managers.
