Man United’s pursuit of Benfica defender potentially ruined by Bayern interest

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has identified a new target to fill his club’s vacancy at right back, but he won’t have an easy time signing him.

Mourinho has identified fellow Portuguese right back Nelson Semedo according to the Sun, but European giants Bayern Munich are also interested in the Benfica full back, and his club are ready to reap the benefits of a transfer battle between the two giants.

It’s no real surprise to see the Red Devils chasing new options in defence. Antonio Valencia has played an astonishing number of games in defence over the last few years, with none of the options the club have bought since then able to show they are much of an upgrade.

In fact one can quite seriously ask the question of whether the Ecuadorian would be at the club if it wasn’t his ability to fill in at the back.

Bayern Munich are also looking for a long term option, in their case to replace the aging Philip Lahm, and with their financial power are one of the few clubs who can match any offer Mourinho’s side make.
