The Daily Mirror have reported that Manchester United are interested in signing Benfica full back Nelson Semedo for £35m

It’s been a problem position for years at United, with Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia regularly having to fill in in defence, as well as a host of youngsters over the past few years. The latter has excellent in recent weeks but is approaching 30 and Jose Mourinho clearly wants a longer term option

Signings Matteo Darmian and Luke Shaw, amongst others, have failed to solve the issues for a variety of reasons, and the manager wants more quality in those positions, although according to the paper he would remain on loan at Benfica until the summer while they find a replacement – not usually something the Portuguese giants find too difficult.

United are also negotiating with Benfica over centre back Victor Lindelof, with the pair each being linked with a price of around £35m; meaning that the club from Lisbon could be making a very healthy profit this January.
