The south-coast side offered £10m for the 23 year old White Hart Lane man earlier this summer but have returned with a £12m offer that may tempt the north London side to sell.
Mauricio Pochettino used the England man as a sub in Tottenham’s opening day win over West Ham but Townsend wasn’t even in the club’s squad for their win over QPR yesterday.
Townsend shone in spells last term for both club and country but a loss of form and a series of injuries have seen the attacker fall to a supporting role at White Hart Lane and a move to St Mary’s may interest the Londoner.
Boss Ronald Koeman saw a host of top talents leave Southampton over the summer but the Dutchman has also spent a fair bit but a move to bring in Townsend could certainly improve his options in the final third.
