The Premier League champions are reportedly keen to bring in more English talent into their squad, and manager Manuel Pellegrini has identified Saints star Rodriguez as one who could improve his current squad.

City allowed Spanish striker Alvaro Negredo to leave the club in a loan move to Valencia this summer, with the move likely to be made permanent in a year’s time, meaning another addition upfront could be useful when the transfer window opens again in the middle of the season.

Rodriguez’s fine form for Southampton in recent times has also seen him linked strongly with Tottenham, but a big-money move to the Etihad Stadium may prove hard to turn down.

Still, English players have not had the best of luck at City in recent times, with the likes of James Milner and Scott Sinclair currently on the fringes of the first-team, while Jack Rodwell and Micah Richards were shipped out to Sunderland and Fiorentina, respectively, this summer.

Southampton, meanwhile, will be keen to avoid selling more players after losing a number of big names in the buildup to this season.
