The Belgian international moved to St Mary’s at the end of the transfer window after becoming frustrated with life at La Liga champions Atletico Madrid.

The Champions League runners-up signed Alderweireld last summer but failed to use him in his favoured central defensive position and left him on the bench for large parts of the season.

Despite the unhappy time he spent in Madrid, the defender could be called back to Diego Simeone’s side next summer if they decide not to sell him.

While the 25 year old admits his long term future could get complicated, he insists that he is only focusing on doing well at his new club.

He said while away on European qualifying duty: ”There is a provision that Atletico can take me back if it wants to.

”For me, next year the construction is complicated. I understand. We sit down together after this season with all the parties and see what is the best solution.”

Alderweireld could make his debut in Southampton’s match against Newcastle at the weekend and is confident he can become a regular for the Saints.

”The Premier League is also changing. I have four years in a row in the Champions League and have played in the World Cup, I know what excellence means,” said the Belgian.

”I hope to accrue games weekly in a top competition like the Premier League.”
