Reports in the Daily Mirror explain that the free agent has rejected Brendan Rodgers’ request to spend four days at Melwood and prove that he is fully over a major knee injury that kept him out for most of last season.
The source explains that the Reds boss wanted to make sure Valdes would be fit to challenge Simon Mignolet for the No.1 spot. But the Spain international, who is trying to secure a deal after leaving Barcelona in the summer, was reluctant to go “on trial”.
Valdes, 32, played 535 games for Barcelona in all competitions, during a twelve year stint with the club’s first-team. He was part of the side that won six La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues, as well as numerous other honours during a dominant decade for the Catalans.
He also earned 20 caps for Spain, despite regularly playing second fiddle to Real Madrid stopper Iker Casillas, and former Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina. He was part of the squad that won the 2010 World Cup, and Euro 2012.
