Led by captain Steven Gerrard, who will miss the game through suspension, there was also promising signs that Daniel Sturridge looks to have fully recovered from the hip injury that forced him out of the England squad for their double header against Italy and Lithuania last week.

Defenders Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho were also seen in deep discussion, potentially talking about how they can handle the in-form Olivier Giroud. The Ivorian is one of two options to replace the suspended Martin Skrtel for the game against one of his former clubs.

Summer signing Dejan Lovren is another in contention to start, the defender has found life difficult on Merseyside since joining from Southampton, but if chosen he will be tasked with maintaining the Reds’ brilliant form away from home which has seen them keep six consecutive clean sheets.
