No Liverpool played has moved from Anfield to Old Trafford in the last 80 years, but Louis van Gaal is prepared to make a substantial bid to ensure that changes this summer.
According to the report, United will need to beat neighbours Manchester City, as well as Chelsea and Arsenal for the £50m rated star, who Reds manager Brendan Rodgers still insists will stay at Anfield and extend his current £35,000-per-week contract.
Bayern Munich are also keeping tabs on the situation, but could be blown away by Van Gaal, who reportedly has another £100m to spend this year, on top of the £150m he spent during the summer of 2014.
All eyes will be on Sterling when Liverpool take on Arsenal on Saturday lunchtime, to see whether the 20-year-old is still committed to the Kop, or whether he has his eyes firmly set on a move away from the club in the coming months.
