Newcastle United are now 2-0 up against West Ham United at St James’ Park as Jonas Gutierrez has added to Moussa Sissoko’s early goal in the second half to all but confirm their status in the Premier League next season.
Gutierrez created the opener in the 54th minute as his pin-point cross from the left-hand side was headed into the net by Sissoko to ensure they controlled their own destiny and just had to match Hull City’s result against Manchester United.
But with the fear of conceding one goal which would have put them back in trouble, Gutierrez eased the pressure on the home side by finding the back of the net thanks to a deflection which wrong-footed Adrian in the Hammers goal.
It was his first goal in over two years and was fitting for the player who has gone through tough times during the campaign, as he has made a full recovery from testicular cancer and celebrated his goal with so much passion.
