The Portuguese side have bought Slovenian goalkeeper Azbe Jug, who will be gunning for Patricio’s number one spot with the team. This could mean that the Primeira Liga giants are preparing to sell one of their prize assets, with the Reds keen on the stopper.
However, whether he will be a straight replacement is doubtful. Jug only made three first team appearances for his last club, Bordeaux, and has never played for his relatively lowly-rated international side at any level higher than the Under 21s.
If Sporting are replacing a 36-cap Portugal international and almost ten-year stalwart of the club with such an inexperienced player it would be a very brave decision.
Liverpool are in need of a new ‘keeper though, with current first choice Simon Mignolet looking unconvincing throughout this season. Several high-profile mistakes led to the Belgian dropped for Brad Jones at one point, but his Australian rival was also found lacking at the highest level.
