Argentine winger Nicolas Gaitan is reportedly closing in on a move to Manchester United, with Record suggesting the transfer could be announced imminently.
The Benfica man has been linked with a switch to the Barclays Premier League, and Chelsea [via Telegraph Sport] have been rumoured to be interested but it looks that the Red Devils have won the race for the 27-year-old’s signature.
Gaitan played a key role in the Eagles’ title triumph this season, scoring four goals in 27 league appearances and has reportedly agreed terms to become United’s second signing of the summer.
Reports in Portugal claim that United have struck a deal with Benfica for a fee of around £25 million and the Metro believe that Nani will head in the other direction as part of the deal.
The winger spent the season on-loan at Sporting Lisbon, where he helped the club clinch domestic cup success, but it would appear he has no future at Old Trafford under manager Louis van Gaal.
If reports are true then speculation over Angel Di Maria’s future at United is sure to increase, despite his insistence that he is not seeking an exit from England this summer [via Daily Star Sport].
Both players like to play on either wing and it would be highly unlikely that the pair would be happy to settle for a rotation policy next season.
van Gaal is expected to be extremely busy in the transfer market this summer and has already added the signing of young Dutch wizard Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven [via ManUtd.com].
Other targets reportedly include Barcelona defender Dani Alves [via ITV Sport] , Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin [via Metro Sport] as well as Borussia Dortmund’s deep-lying playmaker Ilkay Gundogan [via Express Sport] as the club look to pose a genuine threat for the league title next season.
The Dutchman is also thought to be keen on strengthening his striking options after deciding against turning Radamel Falcao’s loan deal into a permanent one and Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema has been linked in the past week [via Manchester Evening News].
