The Madrid star had been presumed to be a certain starter for Dunga’s men, but has been ruled out after complaining about pains in his back.

His replacement is 21 year old Internacional full-back Geferson. Whilst he has had a great six months at club level, helping his side to the Copa Libertadores semi finals, his inclusion is still a surprise – boss Dunga had previously said he would not include any uncapped players in his side.

It means Brazil are threatened to become engulfed in an injury crisis. Dunga has now lost three of his first choice squad to injury, with Marcelo joining Valencia’s Diego Alves and Wolfsburg’s Luiz Gustavo on the treatment table.

The competition gets started in less than a week, with the opening game between Chile and Ecuador taking place in Santiago next Thursday.
