The 26 year old has struggled with injuries since moving to Upton Park and clearly the player’s fitness is a concern for the St James’ Park outfit.

Carroll is currently on a £4m a year deal with the Hammers and that’s not a deal the Magpies are ready to meet without some form of clause covering the marksman’s ability to stay clear of knocks.

Since moving to West Ham on a permanent deal, after an initial loan move, Carroll has made just 24 Premier League starts in two seasons and has managed just seven goals in that time.

Newcastle United have appointed Steve McClaren as their new manager after narrowly avoiding relegation to the Championship in 2014/15.
