As a result, the Blues are going to have to move on to other targets if they are still going to strengthen their defence.

Here five who they have been linked to recently, any of whom may prove to be an adequate replacement for Alderweireld in the heart of the Pensioners’ defence.

5) John Stones, Everton

The London Evening Standard have linked the Blues to the 21-year-old, and he could prove to be a great signing.

The youngster was one of the few bright spots in a dire Toffees campaign last time round, and is one of the best English talents around. However, they will have to fight off Manchester United for his signature according to the Daily Star.
