Video: Riyad Mahrez accepts gift from Ashley Williams to ease Leicester nerves with opening goal

Posted by

Tottenham Hotspur supporters could be cursing Ashley Williams this evening after the Swansea City captain clumsily gifted Riyad Mahrez the opening goal in their Premier League encounter.

The usually-dependable Welsh defender chipped a pass straight at Mahrez, who was as cool as he was ruthless as he accepted his gift to bury a shot into the bottom corner with 10 minutes gone.

Mahrez’s goal was his first in four games, and 17th of the season, and was met with a chorus of relief around the King Power Stadium after nerves set in this week over Tottenham’s title charge.

Spurs closed the gap to five points last weekend, and the suspension of Leicester’s top scorer Jamie Vardy for today’s visit of the Swans had given Claudio Ranieri’s Foxes more cause for concern.

Vardy was sent off in last Sunday’s dramatic 2-2 draw with West Ham United, and faces a possible suspension for the trip to Manchester United after accepting an FA misconduct charge.

That is all forgotten now that Mahrez has bagged a crucial goal on a day when he could be crowned PFA Player of the Year. But Spurs fans will be wondering what on earth Williams was thinking…
