Manchester United are reportedly growing increasingly confident of finally sealing the transfer of Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld this summer.
The Belgium international has long been linked as one of United’s top defensive targets and seems an ideal solution to Jose Mourinho’s issues in that area of the pitch.
Players like Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have not been at all convincing in recent times and surely cannot be relied upon for the long term if the Red Devils are to close a sizeable gap between themselves and Manchester City.
Alderweireld’s quality and experience at Premier League level arguably make him the ideal target out there at the moment, and the Evening Standard recently linked him as a £55million target for Mourinho’s side.
Things may now be moving along, with Bleacher Report’s Sam Pilger claiming in a tweet that United are increasingly confident they can now get a deal for the 29-year-old over the line before next week’s transfer deadline.

United fans will hope this is true, with time running out to find decent alternatives.
Mundo Deportivo have also strongly linked the club with Barcelona’s Yerry Mina, but he’s a far less proven option and has struggled in his brief stint at the Nou Camp.
There could be a lot of sense in Manchester United targeting Daniele Rugani or someone similar, but it remains to be seen what the plan would be if this Alderweireld deal does not go through as is now reportedly expected.
