Liverpool close to risky first piece of January transfer window business as England international poised for Premier League switch

Liverpool are close to completing their first business of the January transfer window as Nathaniel Clyne nears a loan switch to Cardiff City.

According to the Daily Mirror, Neil Warnock’s side are confident of winning the race for the England international, who has had his injury problems in his time at Anfield.

Clyne is also linked by the Mirror with Fulham and Leicester City, and certainly seems a player who could strengthen most Premier League clubs outside of the top six.

The 27-year-old shone at former club Southampton and started well for Liverpool before his fitness problems, which have now pushed him down the pecking order.

With the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez filling in at right-back this season to good effect, it seems to make sense for Clyne to leave on a temporary basis to get some first-team football under his belt.

That said, it could also be a bit of a risky move for the Reds, who have recently lost Gomez to injury too.

Given that squad depth will be crucial to continuing their Premier League title challenge, Liverpool could do without offloading their back-up players too hastily this winter.
