New manager, smash transfer record, wonderkid breakthrough: Five Manchester United predictions for 2019

4) Director of football to join at last

There has been talk of this for some time now, with the Manchester Evening News among the sources to report on it in the last few months.

It’s not yet clear if one stand-out candidate has emerged as of yet, but United will surely at some point this year bring someone in for this all-important position that has become vital to the success of many of Europe’s biggest clubs in the modern era.

Like big signings and managerial appointments, however, one imagines this is another thing that will have to wait until the summer, with what many will see as a fresh start of sorts at Old Trafford.

5) Academy star breakthrough

It’s been a while since we really had one of these at United, with Marcus Rashford a big success when he surprisingly found his way in in 2015/16.

Since then, Scott McTominay has broken through as well, though far less successfully, but there are a number of exciting talents who look ready to make an impact soon.

Solskjaer has suggested promoting from within is important to him, as evidenced by recent involvement of players like Angel Gomes and James Garner, while RoShaun Williams also trained with the first-team this week, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Mason Greenwood and Tahith Chong look like other names who could soon be ready, and I just get the feeling we’ll have at least one new surprise hero in the United first-team in 2019.

Where will Manchester United finish in the Premier League this season?
