Fabrizio Romano explains why Arsenal & Chelsea are in a hurry with PL midfielder transfer pursuit

Arsenal and Chelsea may reportedly have to move quickly for the transfer of Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia due to Manchester City’s buy-back clause becoming active in 2024.

This is why clubs are keen to do a deal for the exciting young Belgium international this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano in his latest YouTube video.

Lavia has shone in his time at Southampton, and it seems Man City still rate him highly despite allowing him to leave the Etihad Stadium for the St Mary’s Stadium last summer.

“Arsenal and Chelsea are among the clubs following Romeo Lavia ahead of the summer,” Romano said, as quoted by the Daily Briefing.

“Manchester City also still really appreciate the player after they sold him to Southampton, but there is a buy-back clause option for City, only valid in 2024, meaning other clubs can try to attack the situation this summer.

“For Chelsea, it could depend on the new manager, but Joe Shields, head of recruitment at Stamford Bridge, knows Lavia well from his time at both Man City and Southampton.”

The 19-year-old has clearly benefited from playing regularly at Southampton, and he could surely strengthen both Arsenal and Chelsea in midfield next term.

Arsenal need younger options in midfield as Granit Xhaka, Thomas Partey and Jorginho aren’t getting any younger, while Chelsea have had a miserable season and surely need to make sweeping changes, with Lavia perhaps ideal to come in as a long-term successor to the ageing and injury-prone N’Golo Kante.
