Leeds United have reportedly been in contact over a potential summer transfer window swoop for Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Julian Weigl.

The Germany international has had a fine career in the Bundesliga and is now being eyed up as an ambitious target for Daniel Farke’s promotion chasers.

Leeds narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League last season, but they now look the favourites to do it this year.

One imagines that will then require some serious recruitment, and Florian Plettenberg has posted on X about Weigl being one of the Yorkshire club’s top targets, while Christian Falk has also given us some extra info via his exclusive Daily Briefing column.

Initial contact is said to have been made, according to Plettenberg, while Falk has also echoed his claims that Weigl and Farke have a good relationship.

However, it seems that Leeds winning promotion to the Premier League could be crucial for their hopes of getting a deal done for Weigl.

Speaking to CaughtOffside for his latest Daily Briefing column, Falk provided his insight into the Weigl to Leeds stories.

“I’m aware there have been links with Leeds United, and it’s true that Weigl has a very good, close relationship with Daniel Farke,” Falk said.

“But a transfer would only be of interest to the player if Leeds were promoted to the Premier League. As things stand, however, Weigl is leaning towards staying with Gladbach.”

It looks like this could be a tricky deal for LUFC to get done, but one imagines it will remain a situation to watch out for in the weeks and months ahead.

It would certainly be some statement if Leeds could bring a big name like Weigl to Elland Road, and it perhaps gives you an idea of the calibre of player the club want if they get back into the top flight.
