Liverpool looking to cement 4th place next season - by landing 8 million defender
by stresster on May 28th, 2008Rafael Benitez has been told by Rick Parry that Liverpool must be Premier League contenders next season (that doesn’t mean tailing off around Christmas time), despite the Spaniard claiming the domestic title is just one option. Nevertheless, some serious spending appears to be under way, with The Sun reporting that Andrea Dossena could be the newest recruit at Anfield in the next few days.
The Italian left-back is rated at £8million, which looks to be well within the Reds’ budget, especially if they offload the likes of Crouch, Carson and Riise. Despite interest from a couple of Serie A clubs, Liverpool appear to be in pole position to sign the player from Udinese.
Dossena, 26, revealed: “Liverpool are a famous team and it’s good to be mentioned with them.
“I want to play in the Champions League and Liverpool are a side who have won it and reach the late stages often.
“They are one of the famous names in Europe — comparable with the biggest teams in Italy.
“In England I think Liverpool are Manchester United’s equal — they can rival them.”
Hmmm, we think you might be slightly misguided on that last point Andrea. It’s been several seasons since Pool were a match for United, at least in the Premier League. It sounds like a scratched record to ask whether Liverpool might finally have the squad to challenge for the title but, can Liverpool finally challenge for the title, providing they make some more quality additions such as the above?!

to be honest still cant see it happening, looking at the the rumour mill lately you looking at united chelsea and arsenal all looking to bring in big quality players, all these teams already have fantastic squads and its only ever improving. Liverpool are realistically still four or five players short of the mark. never heard of dossena before the rumours however heard he is regarded as the most improved player in italy so could be good but i will reserve judgement as rafa has proved to be a bit of a dark horse with his lat three signing which have all looked fantastic ( torres, masch and skrtel). however we still need that creative edge which the other three seem to have in abundance, we need to have a squad that plays good attacking creative football with a cutting edge.
Hopefully once upstairs is sorted out maybe ´we´ll be blessed with owners that actually care about the club and want whats best for it and therefore talk the talk and walk the walk for once to much of the same old this is the year for my liking and would finally like to see someone who actually believes in this club like all the fans do gets behind our boys and the manager and gives him those extra few bob that are gonna realistically push the club forward
till then we pray, liverpool forever chelsea please fuck off about torres you scanky little theiving bastards.

Please why do everyone believe what newspaper says. We are ranked 1st in Europe. Just because we haven’t announce our real signings the paper writes us off. Rafa is just playing mind games for the paper and he WILL reveal his real signings after the Euro’s.

Well if Liverpool are so poor, then why have UEFA placed them a No.1 seed in next season’s Champions League? Liverpool have also reduced the gap in the league from 30 points when Rafa first arrived, to 11 now. I really do believe that Liverpool are making steady progress and will challenge and win the league in the next few years. The youth academy is much improved and there are some great prospects coming through (Nemeth, Plessis, Insua, Huth.) The squad is much better too. Liverpool have quality players in the likes of Gerrard, Skrtel, Agger, Reina, Mascherano, Torres, Benayoun & Carragher. They also have some of the players with the best potential. I.e, Babel & Lucas. It’s a shame that we may lose Alonso & Crouch but we are replacing them with similar quality and improving all areas of the squad. I.e, Gareth Barry, Potentially Sergio Garcia, Andrea Dossena, Philip Degen and we all know about the fact that Rafa is after a winger. So there is much hope for Liverpool who have improved in recent years

Liverpool have needed decent wingers for 4 years now and there still hasn’t been anything done about it - yet!!!!
Much that I think there has been a definite improvement in the squad since Rafa took over he just hasn’t been able to get a decent winger. With the money spent on Benayoun and Pennant he could have bought a big name winger who can add to the goal tally. I’m talking a Silva, Quaresma or Joaquin. God knows, we could have had Alves years ago if we’d bought at the right time.
Let’s hope Rafa doesn’t spend on mediocre players and let’s hope Parry gets the deals done quick (before the Euros) so that prices don’t shoot through the roof.

Anyone else remember the ”we’ve already signed threeplayers one who will go straight into the first team two young players” Anyone else sick to death of lies from hicks and Co? Get them all out, Fan takeover and support Rafa with proper cash for one more season!

Hey Rowan ……
few points for you;
Rafa was the one who made the statement that 3 signing were in the bag ….. one id degen, first team player who is not english but can speak some english and the other two are younger players.
Rafa has spend close to 120 million since he took over and some research i did at the weekend showed manu only spend approx. 4m more (please go check it out and you’ll be as gobsmacked as me. last season 2007/2008, rafa spend over 70m …. manu spent just under 60m (tevez is on loan and they haven’t yet paid out for him) ….. I have supported LFC for over 40 years and can’t remember a time in our history when so much bull has been filling the fans heads!
I like to deal with fact, not what the media tell me ……. Manu buy less but better quality, Rafa likes squad players, so buys more but less quality!
before we go blaming any easy target i suggest we look at our manager ……

Reikirebel, granted Rafa has spent but he has also sold and if you actually look at net spend its much less than united. Rafa took over a poor side and sold off a load of dead wood but also bought deadwood (kronkamp, pelligrino etc) as well as good quality players like agger, alonso, torres et al. Im not saying Rafa shouldnt get blamed im just sick of all the lies and feel rafa probably deserves one more season given proper backing to buy decent players i.e the likes of 3-4 £20m plus players. Is Rafa buying these players because he wants to or because he has to. We’ll never know because no one at our club is honest anymore. Thats what I was refering to.
