Can Spurs do anything to stop striker joining Liverpool?
by stresster on July 2nd, 2008It’s been a shock to the system for Tottenham fans. One minute, they were contemplating the possibility of Dimitar Berbatov sticking around and teaming up with Robbie Keane to form a deadly duo next season, now it appears that they could be playing with Darren Bent as the lone striker and Luka Modric in support.
Oh dear, surely Liverpool aren’t going to dampen Spurs supporters pre-season optimism by snaring the Irishman from White Hart Lane. It’s being reported today that Keane is, ahem, keen to join his boyhood club, although it is only the Daily Mirror so perhaps it’s not quite the done deal they’d have you believe!
But Benitez is prepared to be patient after Keane told friends he would love to join his boyhood club.
The Reds boss is willing to offer Peter Crouch as a makeweight in any deal plus £5million cash.
Spurs manager Juande Ramos, like Benitez, is strapped for cash this summer, and Liverpool hope his interest in Crouch could clinch the deal.
Yet another high-profile player to add to the group marked “I’d like to join a bigger club but my current club won’t let me, unless it’s for a huge fee”. Members include Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Barry and Alexander Hleb.

Please tell me, how is it possible that spurs are starpped for cash, when everyday your telling us they are going to sign another 12 mil winger, or 15 mil midfielder or 15 mil striker and so on and so on
HR - July 2nd, 2008 at 4:23 pm
There should be a law against the press being able to print lies. Newspapers should be made to print a full page apology for every item of news that is proved to be a load of bolox. they would soon stop doing it when they lose advertising revenue or their printing costs increase.
Firstly, Keano’s boyhood team was Celtic. He was offered a chance to play for Liverpool but turned them down to join Wolves - to get more first team football.
Secondly, contrary to the paper talk, Spurs have categorically stated that he has not handed in a transfer request.
Thirdly he is not keen to join his ‘best mate’ Jamie Carragher as his best mates are Carl Robinson of Toronto FC (and formerly Wolves) and Alan Smith.
So when this rumour is dead and buried are the regulators going to sue the media for falsifying news in order to generate paper sales, in the same way that ITV, etc have been sued?? Don’t bet on it.
Tomo - July 2nd, 2008 at 4:36 pm
Agreed, we’ve already spent £25 mil and if you believe speculation we’re going spend at least another £20 mil. How the hell can we be strapped for cash?
Ben - July 2nd, 2008 at 5:38 pm
Would be a good signing for us but not for very silly money!!!!
Perturbed - July 2nd, 2008 at 6:51 pm
Hey HR, thanks for rehashing the completely unbiased take on Robbie Keane you found on Wikipedia. Really adds to the general knowledge on the subject

“Can Spurs do anything to stop striker joining Liverpool?”
isnt he under contract?
whether there is any truth in the rumour or not, too right the club should stand their ground and ask for an inflated fee if they dont want to let the player leave!
teach the greedy fuckers a lesson not to sign such a lucrative long term contract, and then say they want to leave as soon as a bigger club comes knockin
good on Aston Villa and Spurs (if its true), liverpool can pay through the nose if thay want their best players, or go fuck themselves
Berbisoff - July 2nd, 2008 at 8:26 pm
This Benitez is doing to us what he did to Villa, getting his spin doctors to talk to the papers.
It’s a great loophole in contract T’s & C’s.. It’s like the News of The World telling Robbie he is wanted by Liverpool, with no direct contact made by club or player. Authorities will have to analyze what papers are printing and demand source information in situations like this, or the media will be used as a great tool for poaching players.

G-money - July 2nd, 2008 at 9:52 pm
Straped for cash my arse! 30mil and counting, Keane is a god! Rafa’s a man feeling the strain. Unable to develop a player on his own he must pay the full price to buy other clubs developed players!
United did it for MC!
Chelsea did it for SWP!
cartel the yid - July 2nd, 2008 at 10:00 pm
modric 16 mil……dos santos 8.7mil…….gomes 11.4 mil……..and bentley is shortley to be announced after passing a medical over a week ago……do the maths……if its one thing spurs are not, its strapped for cash!!!!…….dont even see the point in commenting on the keane story, as its utter lies!!!
steve - July 2nd, 2008 at 10:03 pm
agree entirely. Liverpool need to sign the top names and Barry and Keane would make them genuine title contenders, however, both players are under contract and cannot leave without the clubs concent. I can’t see Spurs selling Keane as he seems to be part of the furniture there and can’t understand where Keane’s “friends” got their ideas about him wanting to quit from?! It was only a few weeks ago he was on Sky Sports News saying how much he loves Tottenham and how he would love to finish his career at White Hart Lane. How then is it that a month later, Liverpool are “quoted” with having an “interest” in Keane, yet no official approach has been made? Same thing with Gareth Barry, however i believe they made a formal bid for him and good on Villa for telling them where to go. Tottenham held out two seasons ago and managed to squeeze £18m out of Manchester United for Michael Carrick, a player of lesser ability than Barry. Why don’t Liverpool offer what both players are worth if they are genuinely serious about signing them? Keane is widely regarded amongst many Tottenham fans as being the better of the Keane and Berbatov partnership and teams are being quoted around the £30m mark for him so then logically, Keane should cost £35m… In fact, offer them a straight swap… Villa get Gerrard for Barry and Spurs get Torres for Keane. See if they fancy that? That would surely end their interest in the two top class players
Evan - July 2nd, 2008 at 10:09 pm
Well yes, they can say no. And they will…
Deluded liverpool fans think keane will join them! it’s a joke!

James - July 2nd, 2008 at 11:29 pm
Liverpool was hs boyhood club and he should join Liverpool. He’s going to get absolute nothing out of playing for spurs.
At liverpool:
-He’l get paid more
-Link up with the best stiker in the World + Gerrard
-Compete for every trophy going around
-Get seen playing on the World stage
-Live closer to Ireland
-Play infront of the best fans in the World
What is the point for playing for spurs? he’s done everything he can at the club and now should move on to further his career. I mean you have to be deluded to think Keano doesnt want to move to Arguably 1 of the biggest clubs in the World. At Liverpool he’l get everything and more and regulaly win trophies.
Also he come straight into the first team. he does want to move and just because he has not handed in a request doesnt mean he doesnt want to move.
He’stold friends he wants to move
Ireland manager said he should move and liverpool fans want him.
So spurs fans why dont you get off your invisible high horse and exept the wishes of Keano and realise your a SMALL club
muzz - July 2nd, 2008 at 11:38 pm
Spurs if you think Kean doesnt/should move to liverpool the you are very narrow minded. i am a Pompey fan and it is Funny that you think if Kean had a choice he’s pick you!
U are a crap team with little potencial. uve done as well as you can and failed. You will never win anything of value or compete for the title in the slightest.
I hope Kean joins Liverpool because i like him and i want him to flouish and further his career.
He’s all he can no at spurs and moving to liverpool is onvious.
He obviosly wants to move and there have been quotes of him saying he wants to. Funny because if you say no then your gonna have a player who was willing to dump you still playing for you.
Spurs stop being selfish and let him go!
Anonymous - July 2nd, 2008 at 11:59 pm
spurs fans aint bothered about LIES, just facts. Its only out of morbid curousity that we read your crap, but tbh it makes me feel happy knowing that the best teams in europe ‘want’ our players. Bcos they wont get them until surplus. Bottom line, the red tops and other trash spinners can write what they want, well have the right players still wearing white come august.
JimB - July 3rd, 2008 at 12:06 am
James - Liverpool was one of Keane’s boyhood clubs….after Celtic. But that was his boyhood - a long, long time ago. Players don’t think like fans. They will do what is right for their careers. They won’t join a club just because they used to support it. Whatever feelings Robbie may still have for Liverpool are more than outweighed by the the feelings he now has for Spurs (having spent five very happy years at White Hart Lane).
As to linking up with the best strikers in the world, Robbie is already playing with his ideal partner - Dimitar Berbatov. Robbie has flourished and grown into twice the player he once was since the Bulgarian has been his strike partner. I doubt that a partnership with Torres would suit Robbie quite so well. Moreover, Benitez’ teams do not generally play the kind of all out attacking football that Ramos encourages and that Robbie loves.
And as to the idea that Keane would be playing in front of the “best fans in the world”, you really shouldn’t believe the Sky hype. On most match days, the Anfield atmosphere is as flat as a pancake. Only on rare occasions (if, for instance, Liverpool get to a Champions league semi final) does Anfield live up to its hype.
Lastly, whatever Keane’s wishes may be (and only a fool would swallow the crap emanating from the Bristish tabloid newspapers), the inescapable truth is that Spurs are a very wealthy club; they do not need to sell Keane; they do not want to sell Keane; and he still has 4 years left on a 5 year contract. Consequently, Spurs can set whatever price they wish.
And Liverpool, especially given their current financial difficulties, will not be able to meet that price.

oi pompey fan- when u won fa cup(against lesser opoosition) wasnt that the 1st trophy for about half a century or am i mistaken? Little potential? Are u serious? Whilst i rate Harry Redknapp as a half decent manager, the words ‘also rans’ springs to mind. Go buy beanpole boy then u can have a giant and a midget up front. U muppet try pinch our jd- he was our 4th choice striker. OH YEAH WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME U LOT BEAT US?
Liverpool Fan - July 3rd, 2008 at 12:31 am
Crouch and 5milion great deal for him hes a world klass Forward Creates Goals and also scores them hes bagged aloud over the last five years just what liverpool are looking for and i hope we do sign him just the perfect partner for torres
about barry hes over priced we make silly signings and let them go for silly amounts of money like the owen saga we could of got 15 million for him but no he goes for 7million season later newcaste pay 15million..
JimB - July 3rd, 2008 at 12:38 am
Crouch and 5 million for Keane? Don’t be soft, lad!
No way in the world that Spurs would do such a deal.
Firstly, even if Spurs wanted Crouch (which I seriously doubt), they wouldn’t pay more than 5 million for him. Reason? I believe that he is in the final year of his contract at Anfield.
Keane, by contrast, only signed a new 5 year deal with Spurs last summer. Consequently, Spurs would want at least 20 million for him. Maybe more.
Liverpool Fan - July 3rd, 2008 at 12:46 am
Rafa sees crouch as a 15 million money tree , spurs might not want crouch no but it has recently been reported that thay were intrested, it doesnt matter if hes signed a contract last year or 10mins before liverpools bid was accepted , and noway hes worth more than 20million i would say 15ish myself and thats being kind.
muzz - July 3rd, 2008 at 12:56 am
yh ok maybe pompey aint won much but atleast i accept where we are and what we can achieve. you go into very season actually thinking u can brake into the top 4. Pompey though are much better than tottenham. we have muntari and diarra who where both wanted by man utd and barcalona and we won the FA cup and at the end of the day the best team won it. we went to man utd and beat them so the best team won the FA cup.
Where did tottenham come last year? 10th? whereever it was it was a unnoticable season by any means. Pompey at home are almost unbeatable and we undoubtadly have the best fans and many web sites and tv programs agree.
Its just Spurs fans, you dont have any spark. You rarely beat big prem teams in the prem, you are horribly inconsistant in the league and your only good player who will be off soon is berbatov. Atm you are below pompey by alot. our team atm is very very strong and hard to beat at home and away and if we sign a good striker patner for defoe and a couple of others we’ll be pushing 5th all the way.
Just the annoying Spurs thing is that you think your better than you are. you are no better than the 4 teams abouve you and the couple beneath you. Pompey though are strong and are pressing onwards to more success.
complete neutral - July 3rd, 2008 at 12:59 am
Keano should absolutely go to Liverpool. he’l become such a better player for it.
Spurs just give it up cos if he wants to go are you gonna not let him?
Dan - July 3rd, 2008 at 1:19 am
Liverpool Fan, Keane is a much better striker than Crouch, and has 3 years longer on his contract, and you rate them both at 15mil? Your havin a laugh!
2e-thfc - July 3rd, 2008 at 2:05 am
pompey fan please shut up this is a big club chat room.
its a FACT spurs r ALOT more successfull since both clubs were formed this is 1 of the only seasons if not THE ONLY season uve dun beta than us WELL DONE. n dont big up diarra n muntari too much please, neither of them are anything on modric n he’ll prove that next season, u have nothing what so ever to say to a spurs fan except where did u finish last season.FACT. so stik that in ure POOR LITTLE trophy cabinet. silly man.
2e-thfc - July 3rd, 2008 at 2:11 am

lol - July 3rd, 2008 at 3:58 pm
The Daily Mail now reports that Benitez is after tottenham hotspur’s toilets, after coughing up all that crap about Keane he is preparing to spend his biggest transfer kitty of £0.02 (what spurs fans think of his valuation of Keane: £5mil + Crouch) and with Gerrard also good friends with toilet, and the prospect of playing champions league football it will be a likely purchase
jrje - July 3rd, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Why the hell is a Portsmouth fan on here, this is for Keane’s possible transfer, a yeah i forgot their after Kaboul the reject of spurs averaging a performance smaller than the height of Defoe
Josh - July 3rd, 2008 at 4:14 pm
i think torres plays betta upfront on his own
Surely this team will win the league
Reina
Carra
Skrtel
Agger
Dossena
Masch
Babel
Gerrard
Barry
Silva
Torres

always thought keane should be at a top four club. now he will be.
Pompey fan - July 7th, 2008 at 5:17 am
Spurs, times are changing and were all leaving you behind. i hope u enjoy playing it out for 1th against west ham as we’ll be playing in Europe whilst looking at out FA cup. With the “little” skill and quality of players you think we have look at where weve got to. look at what you have and uve done fuk all. fact. U pile of shit spurs cldnt even beat Eindhoven and their crap. can you ever keep a clean sheet?
Face it, Maybe 5 years ago u were good but Pompey are fighting for 4th and we’ll be there for a while. were a club on the up whilst your at an underachieving down.
And you can look anywhere you want nearly all the players, papers and tv programs say we have the best fans so stick that in your pipe and fuk it. ur club is in so much debt u dont even know it. dont u think its a little weird how a club who spends 30 mil a year in the window get knowhere and still is able to buy players. its cos ur in debt.
And we got the best out of defo and now we have crouch with wright-phillips coming in so we’ll defo finnish abouve you next season. no1 cares about spurs anymore. uve just faded into the background.
LFC - July 7th, 2008 at 5:27 am
Spurs ur just like newcastle.
think ur way better than u actually are.
You dont underachieve ur just crap now
Pompey are miles ahead of you atm with to be said not as good a squad yet they still play better football than you, keep clean sheets and win.
And btw, Berbatov is ur only gd player, kean is average, modric is overated, u dnt have a keeper, ur manager doesnt speak english, ure fans are crap and u have the weakest defense known to mankind
