Is it Auf Wiedersehen to Liverpool striker?
by Jon on July 18th, 2008Liverpool are reportedly set to sell Andrei Voronin in a bid to raise cash to purchase Gareth Barry.
The Daily Mirror reckons Rafa Benitez is set to offload the under-performing striker to an undisclosed German club for something in the region of £3 million, which will help finance the move for Villa captain Barry.
Despite scoring a sublime goal against FC Lucerne this week, former Leverkusen striker Voronin, 27, probably won’t be missed by the Anfield faithful, after failing to impress in the Premier League last season.
Will the sale of Voronin leave Liverpool short of cover up front or can they manage quite well without him?

this the best thing i have read in ages. i hope this isnt just another boloks artical…
dieter - July 18th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
hes shit like kuyt, just need to get rid ofd a few more wast of spaces in the squad now
Dews - July 18th, 2008 at 5:08 pm
Its about time he’s a bag of balls, weve got better players and we can get better than him
Triveni - July 18th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
Bout time we got rid of Voronin. I say 3M is a win for Liverpool. With the younger prospects we have and the possibility of acquiring Keane, I see no problems, even without him we can just run Torres alone up top.
Happy Days - July 18th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
Thank god. If we get £3m for him that’d be hilarious. Making £3m profit in a year! Well done Rafa. Voronin, Crouch, Pennant, out, Keane, Barry and a winger (looks like it’s gonna be a sh*t one, Riera? Downing? please no) that gets rid of a lot of sh*te
lfc til i die - July 18th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
I dont agree with voronin being a sh*t player because he clearly aint!! granted he has under performed for liverpool last season but wasnt realy given a chance ive seen him play for ukraine and by bayern and he is a class and very clever player i say give him 1 more season and see if he can light up the prem with the sale of crouchie we need cover id love keano there dont get me wrong but give voronin 1 more chance… barry is only coming coz his stevie g’s best mate im sori we have mascherano and xabi who are better than him.. we need wingers rafa!!! keeper/defence is sorted need 2 quality wingers and a striker 2 help out nando!!!!
Rafa - July 18th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
alleliua!
Dubrogue - July 18th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
Voronin is nor as bad as some on here are trying to make out. The ones saying that haven’t seen him or got a clue about footie. He was injured a lot last season and anyway didn’t cost us a dime. He’s a Liverpool player so support him or you lot fuck off you fair weather twats.
Ben - July 18th, 2008 at 5:38 pm
Yes why not he did nothing last season and barry would benefut us more!
ynwa - July 18th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
i would say that we surely won’t cry or be dissapointed if voronin will leave the club but on the other side he can get another season at anfield. we’ve got dani pacheco and krisztian nemeth in my oppinion better than him and are hungry for first team action so sell voronin bring us keane and barry and another top class winger. and please can someone tell me why we don’t go for barry and keane and get them as soon as possible w’ve spent 10m for dossena and cavalieri and we have 24m from crouch, carson, guthrie,le tallec, riise and itandje plus 20m coming from champs leaugue if my calculations are right thats 34m left in rafa benitez’s kitty with another 2 or 3 mil we can get both
Ticky - July 18th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
Don’t like to slag off LFC players but Voronin’s not up to it. Would rather see a kid like Pacheco or Nemeth given a chance before him. If we can get £3m for him then snatch their hands off.
Also, has anyone noticed that none the players who LFC have sold or are rumoured to be selling (apart from Alonso), made any significant impact last year. Le Tallec, Crouch, Riise, Guthrie, Kewell and Carson have all gone for a sum of £22m, yet would any of them have made any significant difference to the team next season if they had stayed? Same applies to Itandje, Voronin, Finnan and Pennant should they eventually leave. It just shows how many fringe players Rafa had on the books, making no impact yet costing a fortune in wages, but contributing hardly anything to the side. Let’s get as much money as we can for them and buy 2 or 3 class players - ie Barry, Keane and perhaps a class winger.
shadda2002 - July 18th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
Ticky, Finnan has been a great player, not fair those comments. As for Voronin 3 million % profit in 12 months - result. Time to give Nemeth a go he is class and could become a great this is the year he needs a game or two . ps good luck Scott Carson
Morten Tange - July 18th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
I fully agree with you Ticky - Barry, Keane in.
If we sell Alonso £14m Atletico Madrid we could get David Silva £20m and Pennant £6m out and Milner £9m in (Newcastle trade-in). We do get £20m this summer from the CL income last year, so we do have the money for Silva.
Personally i would like to see Rafael van der Vaart as well, but that could only happen if we sell Yossi Benayoun and get some more transfer money, but then we don’t need Milner

liverpool tapping up their rivals for 4th place for their best players,no they wouldn’t do that.the sooner the credit crunch takes a grip on football and hicks and gillette bail out leaving the shite in the shite,we can all laugh at the next leeds.i can see it now, they’ll twat someone like stoke or hull and they’ll be dead certs for the league.fuck off!!!!!!!!!
fseq - July 18th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
Maxwell hung - Liverpool is one of the most valuable and respected football clubs in the world. It’s like saying that if Coca Cola was dumped, nobody would touch it and just let it fade away forever. You’re so up your own crazy ideas that you don’t even realize they’re crazy. Someone would swoop in and buy Liverpool at discount rate and make a killing on it. DIC has the money, no matter the credit crunch. Liverpool supporters have lined up to make a serious bid for the club to make it the next Barcelona. Go to bed and wake up tomorrow trying to see the world with less biased eyes mate.
REDHED - July 18th, 2008 at 11:05 pm
I’m getting pissed off with Rafs fukin around! whats he playing at? its not Liverpools way to be so public in trying to buy players that thier contract owners dont want to sell. never heard boo before deegan & dossena signed on, as is the norm but this very public dragging out of the GB saga is making Liverpool look like those Italian/Spanish chump fuk teams. now I think Rafas a good manager but hes not on the continent now, is Liverpool going down that road? are we gonna go thru this shit every year now? and after 2 months of this ARE we goona get our targets? seems like a big risk to our clubs future.
Andy H - July 18th, 2008 at 11:30 pm
Maxwell Hung, you shrivlled up little prick/manc or just a cunt, my little pony………bye bye (hopefully!!!) I would take barry and keane for the sales we have made…..I want him to go so if MLP goes…..we will have Torres, (possibly)Keane), Babel, and Kuyt (if the later are not onthe wings) up front. I have read rumours about E’to??????? Xabi to Barca in a straight swap deal???? in my opinion we may need some other cover/support up front - you just dont know about injuries???? LFC till we die!!!! YNWA………..

ILL BE HONEST HERE GUYS. FROM WHAT IVE SEEN OF THIS STRIKER, HES TRIED HIS BEST BUT YET AGAIN HIS BEST JUST AINT GOOD ENOUGH. I AGREE HE HAS VISION, GOOD TOUCH, BUT LACKS PACE, POOR WORK RATE. IF IM HONEST I THINK SPANISH AND ITALIAN FOOTY WOULD GET THE BEST OUT OF HIM. OK HES PLAYED OUT OF POSITION AT TIMES BUT WE KNOW WHAT WE ARE GETTING FROM HIM. TOO INCONSISTENT.
LIKE I SAID B4 ID EVEN GIVE HIM A FREE AND SAVE ON HIS WAGES-ANYTHING MORE IS AN ABSOLUTE BONUS.
IN RAFA I TRUST.
BTW THE REASON WHY WE DONT BUY PLAYERS IMMEDIATELY IS TO SAVE MONEY. I THOUGHT THAT WOULD BE OBVIOUS AS WELL AS THE OTHER CLUBS RELUCTANCE TO PART WITH THE PLAYERS. IF WE BUY BARRY FOR 16 M AND KEAN FOR 17 MIL THEN WEVE SAVED 5 MIL WHICH WOULD HELP US FOR OUR NEXT TARGET.

i’m hopin’ this is the squad for 08/09 (reserves in brackets):
gk - reina (cavalieri)
dr - degen or arbeloa (darby)
dl - dossena or aurelio (insua)
cb - carra or skrtel (san jose/antwi)
cb - agger or hyypia (hobbs)
dm - masch or plessis (spearing)
mc - barry or alonso (lucas)
amr - gerrard or kuyt (pennant)
aml - silva or babel (leto)
amc/fc - keane or benayoun (pacheco)
sc - torres (nemeth)
i’m presuming that our gate receipts, sponsorships & prem league payments cover our running costs & i know fees for players don’t get paid all up-front and we’ve probably got some more to pay for torres about now, but i make it that we’re a bit better off than people think?
players out: kewell, riise, crouch, carson, guthrie, le tallec at around £22m, plus possibly itanje, voronin, finnan & pennant at approx another £13m – making a possible £35m. add to that £20m from the champs league from last season it comes to £50-55m
if you look at the approx fees we have and (hopefully) will pay for players this summer:
degen (free), cavalieri (£3m), dossena (£7m), barry (£17m), keane (£18m) & silva (£20m) – that makes a grand total of £60-65m
we would only need another £10-12m of the £20-30m we were promised from the refinancing of the loan last year and we’d be there – wouldn’t we????
danny pacheco's left testicle - July 19th, 2008 at 8:48 am
….and as for voronin - seems like a lovely bloke with a good attitude - but not really what i’d see as a natural challenger for a first choice team place. good squad player and good to have around the club, but….
if we are to truly to challenge for the prem & champs leagues year-in-year-out, then we need more players closer to the level of those regularily selected in the big games.
b-t-w, rafa will only pick up the characters who will not disrupt the squad. i think he learnt pretty quikly dealing with bellamy. he just won’t tolerate those disruptive types.
although they are without doubt quality players, i bet you rafa would never really consider going after the mercenary type footballer like a berbatov or a ronaldo - you’d have to be willing to bleed to get into the team.
what we need now, is more of the good-guy, team-focussed, quality, proven winners - like barry & keane - plus one more gifted creative youngster like silva!

danny pacheco’s left testicle WELL DONE
ONE OF THE THE BEST POSTS IVE READ ON HERE.
MAN U R GOING PLACES!! LOL.
HAVNT U NOTICED THE 2 TOP GUYS WE WANT, BOTH R CAPTAINS FROM THERE OWN CLUBS ( OR VICE CAPTAINS) SIR RAFA IS BUILDING THAT CHARACTER. THAT LEADERSHIP WHICH WILL OOZE DOWN TO THE REST OF THE SQUAD. THOUGHT IT WAS ONLY ME THAT NOTICED.
RAFA ALSO KNOWS TIME IS RUNNING AGAINST HIM.ITS NOT A QUESTUION OF LATER,ITS A QUESTION OF NOW, HENCE BUYS ARE NOW PLAYERS AT THEIR PEAK.
IM NOT SAYING WELL WIN THE TITLE BUT WE WILL GO CLOSER WITH THE BITISH ADDITIONS,PEOPLE USE TO THIS LEAGUE AS LONG AS WE SORT OUT OUR DEFENSE WITH THE NEW COMERS.
GERRARD IN THE MIDDLE ALL I CAN I SEE IS GOALS!!!
IF SIR RAFA PLAYS THAT FORMATION BASED ON A GOOD CREATIVE WINGER WHO CAN SCORE 10 GOALS A SEASON. THEN KEANE WILL SCORE 20 TORRES 26 GERRARD WITH HIS PENALTIES 15 BARRY 8 AGGER AND THE REST OF DEFENSE 4 OR 5.KUYT WHEN HE PLAYS 8 BABBEL 10 BENYOUN 7.
I ESTIMATE WELL SCARE 100 GOALS BUT WILL SETTLE FOR 90.
IF OUR DEFENCE IS GOOD WELL B THERE OR THERE ABOUTS.
ONE OTHER THING. WE MUST WIN OUR HOME GAMES AGAINST TOP 3 OR AT LEAST DRAW WHAT WE TAKE AWAY FROM HOME WILL DECIDE ON OUR POSITION AT THE END OF SEASON.
SO SHALL IT BE WRITTEN AND SO SHALL IT BE DONE !! LOL

[to ‘the chosen one’] first of all thanks for the comment! i’d been writing posts on this site for a week or 2 (under different names) but the only response i’d had was from ‘kop yourself on’ – so not a REAL response at all!!!
the (vice) captains point is interesting. i seem to recall that under houllier, we had 5 or 6 national captains playing for us at one time – i think when hamann & litmanen were both with us??? i’m sure rafa wants players who are experienced, natural leaders all over the pitch. if we do get barry & keane, just look at the positioning of them across the pitch:
——–reina——
——–carra——
stevie-g –- barry
——–keane——
that’s practically half a team – all of these guys could lead the team in their own right. of course i’d hope reina will be between the sticks for us for a long time, but also, with time (and improved english!), players like agger, masch and torres will step into these shoes. of course, these guys already ‘lead by example’.
we have a great number of talented youngsters coming through the ranks and some already established options. these guys will benefit no-end from having the ones above all around them on the pitch.
imagine pacheco playing ‘in the hole’ towards the end of this coming season – torres or keane ahead of him, stevie-g behind him or right, barry behind him and to the left. man, how couldn’t you learn in that environment?! look at how well skrtel has settled in – but then he’s had reina behind him, carra or hyypia alongside him and stevie & masch ahead of him!
as for the goals, you’re right that we could score a big number this season. if keane does come then i think torres won’t score as many – but then that will suit him as he’ll be under less pressure to do so. also, it’ll be great for the rest of the team as others will benefit. gerrard will get 12-15; and barry would get 12-15 – i think he’d be better at the penalties than stevie; i’m really looking for babel to ‘step-up’ his tally this season to 15-18, as he’s now had time to settle and i think he’ll play more and possibly more central.
if we can tighten up on the defence of set-pieces and degen & dossena settle quickly, then i’d expect us to be closer to the GA figure of the previous ‘06/’07 season (and scoring the GF sum from ‘07/’08!). however, i don’t see degen being a natural first choice – unless we’re playing one of the lower teams – and rafa is confident we can survive with 3 at the back. i think he’s good going forward, but his defence needs improving from what i’ve seen. i’d like to know at the end of the season how many times rafa ‘unleashes’ philipp without the cover of masch playing – i bet it won’t be many!!
if we’d won instead of drawn 3 games more against the likes of man city, wigan & middlesborough in dec/jan (an extra 6 points) and ‘shared the spoils’ against the other top 4 teams (an extra 4 or 5 points), then it quickly becomes obvious that we’d be right there. i know that sounds like ‘ifs’ & ‘buts’, but with more quality and less quantity rafa’d be picking a much more settled line-up with much less resting/rotation going on between matches. I’m sure he wants to do this if he feels he can. with that would come more consistency against the mid-table clubs. with 2 more ‘older heads’ we’d be much more confident - and less likely to be overawed - against the arse, utd & chelski’s – home or away.
if we’re close come 5 games from the end, i’d have confidence we could go on to win. we finished very strongly last season – in our last 19 games in all competitions, we won 13 of 19 and drew 4 of the others. the fixtures seem to suit us again in those last 5 league games: hull, newcastle [H], west ham, west brom & spurs[H]. if the last few seasons has been anything to go by, then the geordies and spurs could well be playing for nothing during those games, anyway. however, we’ll hopefully be still competing in cup competitions, too.
i’m always an optimist, but this summer i’m more so than usual – providing we get barry & keane. you never know, someone may spring a surprise on us again and we hopefully might get silva, too…..
IN RAFA…….
