Liverpool are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign long term target Kyriakos Papadopoulos according to the Daily Star.

Brendan Rodgers is known to be a big admirer of the Greek international and though Liverpool were initially unsure of forking out the £13m Schalke are demanding for the centre-back it appears that the Bundesliga side are willing to reduce their valuation knowing that the 21 year old is keen to leave the Bundesliga side.

Rodgers may well feel the need to further strengthen his defence and a move for Kyriakos Papadopoulos certainly adheres to the club’s youthful transfer policy, certainly more so than the signing of veteran Kolo Toure earlier in the summer transfer window.

Liverpool saw Jamie Carragher hang up his boots and there is speculation that Martin Skrtel could well leave the club this summer so a move for Papadopoulos could be a sensible one.

Rodgers should have money to spare to bring in Papadopoulos as the signings he has made have been more than offset by the sales of Jonjo Shelvey, Jay Spearing, Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing.

Papadopoulos has 16 national team caps to his name and has made 92 appearances for Schalke since moving to the Gelsenkirchen based side from Olympiakos back in June 2010.
