Having spent upwards of £110m on new additions over the summer, with few of those brought in impressing, the Anfield manager may not have a massive transfer war-chest to access in January and as such may well be looking at cost-effective additions when the transfer window reopens.

Aston Villa have been on a horrendous run of form of late and may struggle to convince midfielder Fabian Delph and centre-back Ron Vlaar to renew their respective contracts and face the possibility of losing both on free transfers at the end of the season.

Rodgers has seen his defence struggle and could feel experienced Dutchman Vlaar as a solution to that problem whilst Delph could be seen as a strong central midfield option in view of the average displays put in by the likes of Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson this term.

Aston Villa have lost six on the spin and look set for a relegation battle.
