Worryingly for Sao Paulo fans, the recovery period can take up to six months, meaning he will miss the rest of the Campeonato Paulista, the Copa Libertadores, and the start of the Brazilian Serie A season.

Gazetta Esportiva state that Kardec was injured last Wednesday during Sao Paulo’s victory over San Lorenzo in his team’s fourth Copa Libertadores group stage game.

The injury means Sao Paolo have only three forwards available – and none of them are a traditional striker. Alexandre Pato, Ricardo Centurion, and Cafu all prefer to play in a deeper number ten role, while Ewandro is away with the Brazilian national team’s U-20s and Luis Fabiano is also recovering from an injury.

Sao Paulo are currently top of Group A in the Campeonato Paulista, five points clear of RB Brasil.
