Chelsea have been linked with a move to sign Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi ahead of Manchester United this summer, according to Spanish source Super Deporte.

The Blues are seemingly keen on hijacking a move for the Argentine international, whom the Manchester Evening News recently claimed was closing in on a move to Old Trafford, with Real Madrid giving up on the deal due to their belief that he was already heading to the Premier League giants.

Still, additional information from the Metro suggests Chelsea could still be in with a chance of landing Otamendi, with Jose Mourinho supposedly making contact with the player’s agent, though they would have to pay his full £36m release clause to do it.

The Premier League champions could certainly do with at least one signing at the back this summer, despite the fine form of John Terry and Gary Cahill last term that led to a best goals-against record in England as the club eased their way to the title. With only Kurt Zouma as backup and with Terry now 34 years old and perhaps soon in need of replacing, the arrival of Otamendi could prove invaluable.

After such rock solid form in La Liga last season, Otamendi looks a player capable of making the step up to a bigger club, and it would be exciting to see him hone his skills and improve even further under the guidance of defensive expert Mourinho at Stamford Bridge.
