Video: Tottenham Player Ratings v Watford: Match Report & Live Highlights as Spurs go second

Posted by

Kieran Trippier was the hero as Tottenham Hotspur moved up to second place in the Premier League with a 1-0 victory over Watford at home.

Spurs are playing their part in a truly remarkable Premier League season, and as Leicester City tightened their grip on top spot, so the Lilywhites took another step towards a likely title challenge at the end of the season.

The home side enjoyed both the majority of possession and the lion’s share of the efforts at White Hart Lane, but it was Heurelho Gomes who shone.

The former Spurs stopper had a miserable time of it during his spell at north London, and despite being part of the magnificent Harry Redknapp side that reached the Champions League quarter-finals in 2011, the Brazilian is predominantly remembered for his thinkable blunders with the club.

However, it appeared as though the stopper was set for one of his more magnificent showings on Saturday, and he was influential during the first half, keeping Ben Davies at bay.

The South American was to be beaten in the 64th-minute, however, when Dele Alli tore down the left channel after superb work from Moussa Dembele, before sending a superb cross into Trippier, who made no mistake from close range.

Watford strove for an equaliser during the latter stages—bringing on Troy Deeney—but Hugo Lloris and his defence held firm, and Spurs moved ahead of Manchester City into second place.

Tottenham Player Ratings vs. Watford: Hugo Lloris 8.5/10, Kieran Trippier: 8.5/10, Toby Alderweireld: 8/10, Kevin Wimmer: 7.5/10, Ben Davies: 8.5/10, Moussa Dembele: 8/10, Eric Dier: 7/10, Erik Lamela: 7/10, Christian Eriksen: 8/10, Nacer Chadli: 7.5/10, Harry Kane: 6.5/10

Substitutes: Son Heung-min: 7/10, Tom Carroll: 6/10, Dele Alli: 8/10
