Exclusive: Barcelona expected to offer star new deal amid Man United transfer links, says expert

Barcelona are expected to offer a new contract to key defender Ronald Araujo despite ongoing transfer rumours linking him with Manchester United and others.

Speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside for his latest Daily Briefing column, Fabrizio Romano provided an update on Araujo’s situation, stating that it has been the expectation for some time that Barca would hold talks with the Uruguay international over a new deal.

Araujo has been an important player for Barcelona for some time now, and he’d clearly be a fine addition to Man Utd and other top sides, with the Red Devils certainly in need of a new signing or two in central defence.

Romano has previously responded to Araujo to United stories and acknowledged the links coming from the fact that MUFC are looking at centre-backs, though it seems he currently has no significant update on the player’s future.

Discussing Araujo’s situation, Romano said: “There’s no updates or developments on Ronald Araujo’s future yet. Barcelona are fully focused on the pitch now, but then they will discuss many contracts including Araujo, Pedri, Cubarsi and more.

“Many clubs appreciate Araujo but Barca will offer him a new deal, that’s been the expectation at the club for a long time.”

United surely need to think about replacing the likes of Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire this summer, as both players look past their best and have been in and out of Erik ten Hag’s starting line up for much of the season.

Elsewhere, Lisandro Martinez is a good player but very injury prone, while Victor Lindelof is probably not good enough to play regularly for the long term.

Araujo could be ideal for United if he does become available, but it seems nothing is happening on that front right now, and a stay at the Nou Camp is perhaps looking the more likely option, even if that’s also not close to being confirmed yet.
