The highly-rated young forward is nearing the end of his contract at Turf Moor and could be set to leave the club on a free transfer at the end of the season, with Burnley only set to receive £3m in compensation if he moves on.

Leicester City have made an £8m bid to sign Ings this winter, but it looks as though the player himself is holding out for a bigger move and would prefer the chance to sign for Spurs instead.

Tottenham are preparing to table a bid of their own, with Mauricio Pochettino keen to improve on his current options upfront, with the likes of Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor highly disappointing so far this season.

Club legend Jermain Defoe has also returned to train with Tottenham in a bid to maintain his fitness during the MLS close season.
